WHAT IS A THEME?
Describe what these saying means in two to three sentences:

 “You should not judge a book by its cover”
 
“Learn to walk before you run”
 
It is always better to forgive than hold a grudge”

 
State the learning target and the focus for today: I CAN IDENTIFY THE CONFLICT IN A TEXT TO DETERMINE A THEME


Opening: Today we are going to use the problem/conflict to determine the theme of the text.
 
What are some possible themes of Document C: "The Calydonian Boar Hunt"

Create a Theme Strategy Chart 

We can use it figure out the theme. Ask Yourself…. [ANNOTATE - Underline these things below while reading the text]
 
1. What is the problem?
2. Where in the story does the problem exist?
3. How does the character respond?
4. What life lesson can be learned?



Work Session: Then break off into collaborative groups to work through Document D: "Atalanta and the She-bear"
Figure out the theme. Ask Yourself…. [ANNOTATE - Underline these things below while reading the text]
