Activator: SCAN/PREVIEW Analyzing the images of the 1st 3 pages of Chasing Lincoln’s Killer and complete the Noticing and Thinking graphic organizer [Box 1] Purpose:  They are to simply “notice” and record (2 minutes) ASK:  What do you see?

The LESSON:
Read The Prologue of Chasing Lincoln’s Killer pgs. 1-8 Students will document significant details from the prologue in Text Box 3 [focusing on the reading strategies: drawing conclusions. inferencing, etc.]

Closing: TONE/MOOD
In my class students will describe the tone and mood of the prologue. Students will justify their perspective using details from the text. Critically thinking about the images on the 1st 3 pages and how they contribute to the mood and tone of the text. Students will focus on providing evidence and support from the text and images.

Activator: We will review the RACE strategy through the RACE Strategy Kick Off

Lesson:
  1. As a class we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums [print, media, text, videos, etc.]
  2. Students complete the unit by developing their Analysis/Claim for this week’s unit.
To support the writing of the claim or analysis:  We will review the RACE strategy and use the graphic organizer to develop the analysis/claim

Ask Yourself These Questions: 
  1. What words or ideas are repeated in all 3 text boxes?
  2. How do details change or stay the same across the text boxes?
  3. Which details are most important?
  4. What does the text leave uncertain or unstated?
  5. Which words are critical for understanding?
